Course Descriptions

ASL 1

This full year class is designed as a foreign language course. All curriculum used in class, is approved by the Deaf Community and is used in the Colleges to teach American Sign Language. 

Students will learn American Sign Language structure by learning new signs every week with classroom exercises. They will be creating ASL sentences and signing different ASL dialogues while learning about the Deaf culture. They will also learn there is a difference in some of the sign languages that are being taught and that are in other books, and why the Deaf Community does not use those signs, and what the difference is. 

There will be homework every week and quizzes on what they have learned periodically throughout the year. All material will be included.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Unit One:

  • Introduce yourself (fingerspell your name, ask for name, and express pleasure in meeting someone)

  • Know how to identify a person (gender + brief description)  

  • Know the appropriate ways to get a person’s attention

  • Follow classroom instructions

  • How to describe a shape and how to indicate where to place a secondary items

  • Know how to correctly use facial expressions

  • Know the correct hand positions for fingerspelling

  • Know the alphabet and numbers covered in class

  • Know the vocabulary covered in class in this unit

Unit Two:

  • Know how to ask a yes/no question

  • Know how to identify a person (gender, appearance, body position, and/or action) and either ask a question or make a statement about the person.

  • Know the correct way to acknowledge information signed by the other person.

  • Know how to narrate my language background 

  • Know how to narrate information about a person

  • Understanding the role Gallaudet University plays in the Deaf community.

  • Know the vocabulary covered in class in this unit

Unit Three:

  • How to give commands involving objects and locations

  • How to locate places using real world orientation

  • Know to show spatial agreement by orienting sign to person you are referring to

  • Know how to describe pets

  • Know how to response to “thank you”

  • Know the vocabulary covered in class in this unit


ASL 2

The students will continue learning the American Sign Language structure by learning new signs every week with classroom exercises. They will be creating ASL sentences and signing different ASL dialogues while learning about the Deaf culture. They will also learn there is a difference in some of the sign languages that are being taught and that are in other books, and why the Deaf Community does not use those signs, and what the difference is.

Unit Four:

  • Are able to ask someone if they are married and then ask other personal questions about family.

  • Are able to ask someone if they have siblings, who is the oldest, and ask about similarities and differences between siblings.

  • Know how to indicate one’s rank among siblings when discussing ages.

  • Can read and sign age numbers

  • Am able to make a negative statement, correct information, or do both.

  • Able to ask someone yes-no questions regarding relatives and whether the relatives are still living or dead.

  • Know how to make complimentary comments to people about their families.

  • Know how to maintain a clear sightline at all times, both as a signer and as a listener.

  • Know the vocabulary covered in class in this unit

Unit Five:

  • Are able to ask what someone did/will do on a certain day.

  • Are able to ask when someone did/will do a certain activity.

  • Are able to ask someone if they have completed an activity.

  • Know how to use time signs to discuss events in the future and in the past.

  • Know how to express opinion.

  • Know how and when to indicate tense in a sentence.

  • Know the vocabulary covered in class in this unit
